Sunday Sermon Snack – Sunday : Salt and Light

Good evening, everyone! What a day! It’s was beautiful today. I went to church and it was amazing meeting with God and giving him all the praise for everything that he and all that his Son Jesus has done on the inside of me. It was also amazing joining together with like-minded believers praising God for the same reasons.

I just came across my notes for a sermon Pastor Josh preached two weeks ago. It’s an extention of another sermon he preach. (For that delicious snack, click here.) This is a powerful word and I believe you’ll be blessed just as much as I was. Don’t forget to bless someone else. Bon Appétit!

Salt-and-Light

We are part of God’s plan. We can’t allow ourselves to focus on our own failures and insecurities. A pinch of salt can make all the difference in the world. Jesus sends us out as light in a dark place and some people will reject us. The truth sets us free not just from sin but life also. Caring too much about life can choke us out. There’s more than this. Invest in the fullness of who you are. When you go all in with God, watch what happens. Trust him completely. It’s all about his grace. Surrender to him and find out who he really is.

There’s a difference between a thermostat and a thermometer. Thermometers are indicators that measure the global climate. It’s just data, like our news programs. A thermostat has a thermometer on it, but it has the ability to change the temperature and climate of the room. It’s connected to something that has the power to change it. We tend to observe the obvious in a broken world. We aren’t suppose to be just indicators. We are connected to a source to bring change. We have to allow God to work through us so we can be the salt and light in this world. Some people will flee from the light, but others will desire to have it so they can be changed. We have to allow our minds to be changed.

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”
I Corinthians 2:12, 16 NKJV

It’s easy to wait for someone else to bring the change that is needed, but we mustn’t do that. You’d be surprised how a light bulb can make a difference in a dark room. There’s a spirit of this world trying to keep us distracted from who we really are. The devil can minimize our impact to make us think less of ourselves. The spirit of God  is what we have received. Don’t let anyone take that from you. God’s love sent his Son to the cross as a free gift. The world is bent on changing our thoughts so we will act the same way we did before we were saved. When God said all things are made new, that included our mind. He gives us the ability to think like him. The natural mind will take you to the smallest place of practicality. But Jesus is the source of our joy. He doesn’t give us a piece of his heart, but the whole thing. God relates to the church through marriage. He give himself to us and we give ourselves to him. It’s an act of faith. God holds nothing back from us.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Romans 12:2 NKJV

If God’s mind is in us, why would we think a different way? People hurt one another by doing things that seem right in their own minds. It’s a heart issue. As we give our minds to God he fixes our hearts. Don’t go along with everything the world throws our way. We can’t be spiritual robots. Robots can’t love. We have to take his love to the nations. That’s what happens when we have a transformed mind. We have to have faith and look past the broken things. When God’s strength comes into us, we find victory in places we didn’t see before. Seek to know him more. If God was going to leave us out to dry, he would’ve done it already. Whatever part you’re lacking, he will fix it. A transformed life comes with a transformed mind, but we must choose to believe it. We must choose not to do it in our own strength otherwise we will keep struggling with these issues.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
Philippians 4:6-8 NKJV

We must know him and follow him. We can’t follow him and ourselves at the same time. God wants us in or out. We can’t be in the middle. Jesus will never let us drown. He will save us just like he saved Peter. When people submit to the spirit of the world they will follow their own minds and it will seem normal to them. God gives us a new mind and we must believe in it. Let your concerns be made known to God, not Facebook or Twitter. People will never lift you to the place that the Holy Spirit can lift you to. What you allow into your mind can have an effect on you. God gave us a peace that will guard our hearts.

The attitude of this culture is “whatever” and they lack the ability to filter what goes in our minds. God put us here to shine in a dark world. We need a better whatever list. The spirit of this world is not more powerful than the Spirit of Christ and his church. This is why the mind is so important.
We have the authority to change the atmosphere.

Self control is a powerful thing, something that God gives in the new birth. When an environment is healthy, growth will happen naturally. God gives a skin barrier that’s selective with what comes into our bodies. We live in a hostile environment. God gives us the ability to be selective and he keeps us in the hostile places. We mustn’t let everything in otherwise it will cause us to do things we shouldn’t be doing and have issues we shouldn’t have. We have to set a filter for our minds. There’s room for messes and to learn about this life, but we must guard our heart.

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:23 NKJV

Enbrace the whole heart of God.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV

There are alot of things we can’t control, but we can decide what thoughts we think about. If the thought isn’t the thought that Jesus would think, why are you thinking it? Bring every thought into captivity. We need weapons because it’s a hostile environment. Don’t let the bad things come into your mind. It’s your responsibility to keep your heart guarded and cast down wicked thoughts. We can’t avoid our responsibility, otherwise we will face the consequences.  We were created for a purpose that goes beyond what we can see. We have all that we need to guard our minds.
